When Sean Payton talks about quarterbacks, he often talks about accruing, “flight miles.”Translation: Real, live action.Russell Wilson had that in spades over 12 years and 188 regular-season games as a starter.Jarrett Stidham entered his first start for the Broncos on Sunday with only two others under his belt, which came last year for Las Vegas. The 69 offensive snaps in a 16-9 win against the Los Angeles Chargers, then, provided critical time at the plane’s controls.“My preparation is not changing from last week to this week,” Stidham said Wednesday. “That’s how I’ve always prepared. But obviously it was good to go out there and get the win last week and build off of that going into this last game of the season. Just trying to clean up these last few little things we have this week and go out there on Sunday and hopefully get a win.”Payton said Monday that, like any player, Stidham’s performance over the final two weeks factor into the evaluation of the team’s future. Letters: Opposition to Belmar Park apartments is about preserving a beloved spot of nature

Opposition to Belmar Park apartments is about preserving a beloved spot of natureRe: “Residents battling apartment project,” Dec. 24 business storyJohn Aguilar’s article about the controversial residential development next to Belmar Park in Lakewood covered the issue thoroughly, but it’s worth emphasizing — again — that the giant residential complex planned by Kairoi Residential will sit smack on the boundary of the park; 1,000 people, their pets, traffic, noise, lights, air pollution, and lots of glass windows will not produce good outcomes for the native fauna there. Just as important, such development will seriously reduce the peace and quiet that people enjoy in the park now. No buffer space is planned.Regarding noise impacts on wildlife, environmental author Ben Goldfarb wrote, “For animals that survive by the grace of their hearing, traffic’s ‘masking effect’ can be fatal. Ambient road noise drowns out songbirds’...

Letters: No compassion | Reagan’s ‘ideals’

Submit your letter to the editor via this form. Read more Letters to the Editor.Texas abortion banlacks compassionRe: “Woman to leave Texas for abortion” (Page A1, Dec. 12).I am so outraged about the recent Texas abortion case that I feel compelled to write.During my long career as a neonatal nurse (now retired), I had the sad experience of taking care of a couple of trisomy 18 infants. Each survived only a few hours. This is a fatal anomaly, so what possible harm could there be in allowing an abortion in this case? And this doesn’t even include the woman’s maternal complications. Why do Texas politicians hate women so much and have so little compassion that they would not permit an abortion in such a case?I am so glad I live in California where the right to abortion is now enshrined in the state Constitution. Only women and their medical providers need to be making decisions regarding abortions.Peggy MoyersOaklandReagan’s ‘ideals’grew U.S. ...

Did Pamela Price recall group exploit Oakland officer’s murder with fundraising thread?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:37:08 GMT

A war of words between Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s campaign and the group pushing for her ouster has raised questions about the ethics of exploiting violence in Oakland for political purposes — and the increasingly tense recall effort. On Tuesday, Price’s “Protect the Win” campaign group put out a statement decrying the recall group’s “reprehensible” efforts to fundraise in the aftermath of Oakland Police Officer Tuan Le’s killing. In the statement, they condemned a thread on X, formerly Twitter, in which the Recall Pamela Price account said that Officer Tuan Le’s death underscored the need for “rescinding failed policies.”In a second post, the recall account shared a link to the group’s website, which highlights a $100,000 donation drive.Le, 36, was shot and killed near Oakland’s waterfront last Friday while working a plainclothes burglary-suppression detail.William Fitzgerald, a spokesperson for the Protect the Win campaign, s...

Stockton man suspected of murdering Oakland officer had killed before as a teen; third suspect arrested

OAKLAND — A Stockton man who police have named as a suspect in the killing of Officer Tuan Le has a prior manslaughter conviction in connection with a 2014 shootout that killed an 18-year-old man, according to court documents and multiple law enforcement sources.Mark Demetrious Sanders, 27, was booked Tuesday into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of killing Le, pending a review by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office to potentially file charges. Police have identified Sanders as the man who allegedly opened fire into an unmarked police car containing Le, who was on an undercover detail monitoring a Dec. 29 early morning burglary in progress at a cannabis business. But court records show it’s not Sanders’ first time being arrested on suspicion of homicide. In April 2014, when Sanders was just 17, the U.S. Marshals arrested him in Modesto in connection with the killing of 18-year-old Marcellus Perry.Perry was killed during a February 2014 shootout near Banc...
