Police: Man helping get goose out of road struck, killed in suburbs

KANE COUNTY, Ill. — A man was struck and killed after helping get a goose out of traffic early Tuesday morning in unincorporated Elgin Township.At around 6 a.m., authorities were dispatched to the 1200 block of St. Charles Street on the report of a pedestrian struck.Police believe Rateb Arqan, 59, of West Chicago, pulled over on the side of the road to help remove a goose from southbound lanes of traffic. At some point, he was struck by a 2012 Chevy Express van, driven by Juan Padilla-Regalado, 29, of Elgin. Arqan was pronounced dead at the scene. (KTLA) – A California teenager missing since Jan. 1, and who may have been held captive, has been found safe, authorities with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday. Alinka Castaneda, 16, left her family’s home in Carson, California, and was seen “entering an unknown vehicle” at 5 a.m. that day, officials with the sheriff’s department said. PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (KTXL) – A car became airborne and crashed into the second story of a home in California, according to photos shared by CAL FIRE officials.Firefighters with the Placer County Fire Department, along with CAL FIRE officials, responded to the scene of the crash on Sunday, CAL FIRE's Nevada Yuba Placer Unit confirmed. PG&E shut off power to the area while crews worked to stabilize the roof of the home's carport and rescue the driver of the car.With the assistance of a rope system, a CAL FIRE Technical Rescue Team removed the vehicle's single occupant, who was handed off to an emergency medical team waiting in the home's second story. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A death in east Austin Tuesday morning was determined to have occurred out of self-defense. The Austin Police Department said on Twitter it happened in the 7600 block of Bethune Avenue. The area is close to the St. Johns neighborhood, just south of U.S. Highway 183 and east of Interstate 35. A spokesperson for APD said a woman in the home called 911 around 5:31 a.m. reporting a man was trying to break into her house. The woman told police the man was banging on the door trying to break in, and she was holding the door shut, according to the spokesperson. Soon after, the woman said he was trying to break into a window. The caller then told police the man had entered the home and shots were fired, according to the spokesperson. APD arrived on the scene at 5:37 a.m. and Austin-Travis County EMS arrived shortly after. The man was pronounced dead on the scene around 5:48 a.m. APD said the man was shot by a resident in self-defense. As Ramsey County declares a local emergency, operations at St. Paul Downtown Airport (Holman Field) will temporarily cease Tuesday as crews install flood barriers as the Mississippi River conitinues to rise.The river — expected to reach major flood stage of 17 feet on Wednesday — borders the airport. The Mississippi is expected to crest above 18 feet by the end of the week.The Metropolitan Airport Commission — which owns and operates the airport — sent crews to install a section of its metal plank floodwall system along the east end of the airfield last week, leading to the closure of two runways. MAC officials say these secondary runways will remain closed until the floodwall system is taken down.The primary runway at the airfield closed at 10 a.m. Tuesday to let workers extend the floodwall system over the south end of the airfield.
