Rising salinity creates daily struggle on India’s coast

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:42:37 GMT

By Uzmi Athar | Press Trust of IndiaKOCHI, India — Anthony Kuttappassera’s family has lived in the same house at the edge of the Arabian Sea for more than a century. He grew up drinking water from the pond and the well outside his home. But 60 years ago, that water became too salty to drink. Then it grew too salty for bathing or washing clothes. Now, the pond is green, buggy and nearly dry — just like the rest of the wells and ponds in the Chellanam area of Kochi, a city of about 600,000 people on India’s southwestern coast.Rising seas from climate change are bringing saltwater into the fresh water of places like Chellanam, rendering unusable what had been a vital part of everyday life. And frequent breaks in the pipelines that bring fresh water from inland exacerbates the misery for residents in this village of about 8 square kilometers (3 square miles), requiring water to be trucked in.Each truckload of water has to be poured into barrels and buckets and carried by hand...

This is a monstrous injustice. Why? Because, obviously, he should have long ago been charged and convicted on hundreds of other occasions. Yes, these misdeeds technically aren’t “crimes,” at least if you’re limiting yourself to the “words” written in “the law.” But it definitely feels like they should be illegal. Here, I’m not talking about the standard felonies committed by every U.S. president, i.e., stealing billions of dollars of our money and pouring it into the pockets of America’s billionaires; presiding over our national gulag; and converting numberless foreigners into scraps of wet, red flesh. Trump did all that and more, but you can’t blame him for...

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell on Wall Street Tuesday following a pair of weaker-than-expected economic reports. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq composite lost a similar amount. The reports on job openings and factory orders may have reinforced forecasts that a recession could hit the economy. Child sex abuse law challenged before Colorado Supreme Court

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:42:37 GMT

DENVER (AP) — When Angelica Saupe was 20, she went to police to report that she was sexually abused by her high school basketball coach as a teen but said she was wrongly told that it was too late to pursue criminal charges against him.She got another chance to pursue her claim last year after state lawmakers allowed childhood victims of sexual assault to sue their alleged abusers and employers. But now, the Colorado Supreme Court is considering whether the law violates the state constitution. Colorado homes are getting smaller and more expensive The court's justices heard arguments Tuesday from a lawyer representing Saupe as well as Aurora Public Schools, which Saupe sued under a law that took effect last year that opened up a three-year window for people to pursue litigation for sexual abuse they suffered as children dating as far back as 1960. The law is part of a national effort to make it easier for victims to seek justice later in life after they have had time to come to ter...
